Why, My Soul, Are You Downcast?
Passage: Psalm 42
REFLECTION QUOTES
“Most people, if they have really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise. The longings which arise in us when we first fall in love, or first think of some foreign country, or first take up some subject that excites us, are longings which no marriage, no travel, no learning, can really satisfy…. something has evaded us.”
— C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
What’s your experience with spiritual depression?
Read Psalm 42. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What images are used to reflect God? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage?
In verses 3 and 10, the psalmist poses the outsider question, “Where is your God?” Where do you hear this question being asked in your life? What sources, inputs, people, contexts are asking this question?
In verses 5 and 11, the psalmists asks personally, “Why, my soul, are you downcast?” In what ways is this question helpful for us particularly when we are experiencing spiritual depression?
Psalm 42 teaches us by example that when we feel downcast, alone, and forgotten, that we need to keep talking to God privately and publicly and continue preaching to ourselves the truth of who God is and who we are as his child. What is the psalmist’s relationship with the community of God’s people? How does the psalmist teach us to continue engaging with God when we feel forgotten?
What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week or praise God for?
PRAYER
If there are other concerns not already shared during the discussion, share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?
Psalm 27:4 “One Thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple.”
