The Shoot and Root

Passage: Isaiah 11:1-10

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

What is something you are looking forward to in celebrating Advent? What’s one aspect of life where you are experiencing things not being the way they’re supposed to be?

Read Isaiah 11:1-10. What surprises, encourages, or sparks questions for you? What reminds you of God’s goodness towards you?

These verses anticipated Jesus’s coming. Advent is a season of waiting. It’s important to know who we are waiting for. As we reflect on the way Jesus came in the incarnation and anticipate his coming again, how do these verses describe the One we’re waiting for? Consider that Jesus is the shoot and root of Jesse.

How do these verses describe what Jesus has inaugurated and will do fully in his second coming?

We sometimes envision God’s redemption of us and creation as an evacuation plan, but that’s not the same as restoration. In what ways does understanding who Jesus is and what he will do, impact your expectations in waiting for him and following him?

What from this passage do you need to remember, rejoice in, request, or repent of?

PRAYER

Share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?
