Christ, Our Passover Lamb

Passage: 1 Corinthians 5:1-13

REFLECTION QUOTE

“This is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ – to the glory and praise of God.”  —Philippians 1:9-11

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

In what ways can our behavior reveal our allegiances?

Read 1 Corinthians 5:1-13. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage?

In verse 2, how had the church responded to one of their members involved in an outrageous sex scandal? Why was Paul especially concerned about the church’s response?
What harm is done to a church body when they tolerate open sin among their members? Are there particular sins in our cultural moment that we’re more likely to pride ourselves in tolerating?
According to this passage, how are we called to engage with a brother or sister persisting in evident sin? (See also Matthew 18:15-20)
What is the distinction Paul draws between how we relate to the world including those who live according to the ways of the world, as opposed to how we relate with members of God’s family?
What are the challenges and benefits in our present moment to discerning and addressing sin in our church community?
How might church discipline (addressing sin appropriately with kindness and all the fruit of the Spirit) be a witness to a watching world? What is its purpose for those involved?
What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week or praise God for?

PRAYER

Share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:15-17
