The Easter Story for the Rest of Us

Passage: Luke 24:13-35

REFLECTION QUOTE

“As I dug into the New Testament historically, it didn’t read like polished mythology. It read like people trying to describe something they believed they had actually witnessed. Real places. Real names. Awkward, inconvenient details you wouldn’t invent if you were creating a legend.”

Nate Hanson, Faith Lab

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

Share a time or context when you experienced life-giving hospitality. What made it encouraging or life-giving?

Read Luke 24:13-35. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage? Is there someone in this text that you identify with?

In verse 16 the two disciples are described as standing still with their faces downcast. They were working through their disappointment in their hope and faith. When have you experienced a moment or season of feeling stuck and downcast? How have you had to work through a profound disappointment in your faith, expectations, or hopes?

The two disciples are transformed between verses 13 and 35. They encounter Jesus through the opening of the Scriptures and community centered on him. How has opening the Scriptures, learning and digesting God’s word, taken root in your life and produced fruit of understanding, encountering, and delighting in Jesus?

How have you helped others to receive God’s word or what contexts and relationships do you currently have that could be opportunities for opening God’s word with others?

This passage takes place in the context of community – through discouragement, transformative learning, and sharing the good news of Jesus with others, the two disciples discuss and experience and share together. Jesus walked with them showing relational hospitality, and the two disciples quickly want to share their experience and revelation with others. Who has walked with you, opened the Scriptures for you, and shared with you about Jesus?

How has Christian community walked with you through various seasons? What does it look like for you this week to walk with someone else, open the Scriptures, and encourage them with the truth and hope of our risen Lord?

What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week or praise God for?

PRAYER

Share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?
