Passage: Luke 19:28-40
REFLECTION QUOTES
“Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed
You’re gonna have to serve somebody”
—Bob Dylan, “Gotta Serve Somebody”
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Share a time you’ve met or been around someone “famous.” What was the experience like? How was the person treated? If we say someone is being treated “like a king,” what does that involve?
Read Luke 19:28-40. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage? Is there someone in this text that you identify with?
Contrast the differences between how Jesus’s kingship is declared compared to how we might treat a king today or previously in history. The sermon considered how Roman emperors were treated as kings vs how Jesus displayed his rightful kingship (i.e. transportation, messaging, peoples’ responses, colors worn). The distinction was intentional. What is the significance of these differences?
C.S. Lewis wrote in Present Concerns, “Where men are forbidden to honour a king they honour millionaires, athletes, or film-stars instead: even famous prostitutes or gangsters. For spiritual nature, like bodily nature, will be served; deny it food and it will gobble poison.” How have you felt this same urge to honor or entrust yourself to a false king?
Jesus is the only king who will not oppress you, but bless you. In what ways does the kingship of Jesus encourage or challenge you? Are there specific things that you need to continue or change in living this week under the kingship of Jesus?
PRAYER
Share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?
Luke 15:10, Jesus speaking: “I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
