Sit at My Right Hand

Passage: Psalm 110

“Who is my opponent? I, he says, am the Christ. I am the one who destroys death and triumphed over the enemy and trampled Hades underfoot and bound the strong one, and carried off man to the heights of heaven. I, he says, am the Christ.” – Melito of Sardis, AD 195

“The Son of glory came down, and was slain,

Us whom he had made and Satan stolen, to unbind.
‘Twas much, that man was made like God before,
But, that God should be made like man, much more.”
– John Donne, Holy Sonnet 15
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:What gives you a sense of wonder or awe?

Read Psalm 110. What does this psalm show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage?

In Psalm 110: 6  there is a sense of joy or anticipation in judgment. C.S. Lewis in his book Reflections on the Psalms wrote, “Many of the psalmists’ remarks about the judgment of God sound to us at first very strange. They talk like people who are looking forward to it. They ‘rejoice’ that He will come to ‘judge the world’… Is this what we feel? We must get out of our modern, skeptical, or terrified minds and realize what it meant to someone who had suffered injustice…” What wrong are you longing for God to ultimately “put right”? How is this mentality towards God’s judgement important for the Christian life?
In this psalm we see Jesus, who is God, is our Lord. Pastor Kevin DeYoung describes a few imposter views of Jesus that counter his lordship. Where do you see your own tendencies to give Jesus’s rightful authority away? What does it look like in our lives for Jesus to be my Lord?
  • There’s Republican Jesus who is against tax increases and activist judges, and for family values and owning firearms.
  • There’s Democrat Jesus who is against Wall Street and Wal-Mart, and for reducing our carbon footprint and spending other people’s money.
  • There’s Touchdown Jesus who helps athletes run faster and jump higher than non-Christians and determines the outcomes of Super Bowls.
  • There’s Yuppie Jesus who encourages us to reach our full potential, reach for the stars, and buy a boat.
  • There’s Platitude Jesus, good for Christmas specials, greeting cards, and bad sermons; he inspires people to believe in themselves
  • And then there’s Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Not just another prophet. Not just another Rabbi. Yahweh in the flesh…the lamb of God come to take away the sins of the world.
Jesus is our Lord and he is our comforter. In verse 4 we learn that Jesus, who is God, is our everlasting priest representing us to God, providing the way to God. What challenges do you face in seeing God as your comfort?
Theologian Jonathan Edwards described Jesus saying, “He is a Lion in majesty and a Lamb in meekness and patience.” How does seeing Jesus as our Lord and our comfort together transform your understanding of God and of your identity?
What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week?

Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burned, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
