Rich Toward God

Passage: Luke 12:13-21

“Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can.”  — John Wesley

SERMON OUTLINE:

  • A Subtle Danger
  • False Promises of money
  • Cultivate Generosity

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

What has had the biggest impact on shaping the way you think about money?

Read Luke 12:13-31. What surprises, encourages, or challenges you from this passage? Is there anyone you identify with in this passage? Why?

In verse 15, Jesus warns, “Watch out!” calling us to be on our guard against all kinds of greed. In what ways or areas are you more prone to greed?

Money falsely promises to give us self-worth and security. In what ways does the man in Jesus’s parable “buy” into these promises? How have you wrestled with these false promises?

Verse 21 ends with an encouragement to be rich towards God. How have you learned generosity? In what ways have you practiced generosity as something done 1) with others, 2) with intentionality, and 3) by grace through faith (seeing Jesus as our perfect generous older brother)?

PRAYER

Share with your group how they can be praying for you: what is weighing on you from this past week? What are you praising God for from this past week?

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the powers of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13)
