More Grace

Reflect on seasons of your life when your faith has felt particularly energized or encouraged. What fueled your life in those seasons?

Read James 4:1-10. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage?

James uses the imagery of “adultery” in verse 4 to describe idolatry or friendship with the world. In the Message translation this verse goes, “You’re cheating on God. If all you want is your own way, flirting with the world every chance you get, you end up enemies of God and his way.” In what ways does this imagery help us understand the impact of our sin or misplaced loves?
N.T. Wright writes, “If you go with the drift, if you don’t reflect on what you’re doing but just pick up habits of mind and body from all around you, the chances are you will become friends’ with ‘the world’ in this sense. You will be ‘normal. It takes guts to stand out and be different. It also takes thought, decision and determination.” How have you experienced the truth of this statement, both the drift of picking up unhealthy habits and the guts to stand out against the drift?
John Flavel, a 17th century British presbyterian minister described 6 ways we may be tempted to “cheat” on God. Which of these ways might be more tempting to you?#1: The Pleasure of Sin: Here is pleasure to be enjoyed. Who can stay away from such delights?

#2 The Secrecy of Sin: This sin will never hurt you in public because no one will ever find out.

#3 The Profit of Sin: If you just stretch your conscience a little, you’ll gain so much.

#4 The Smallness of Sin: It’s only a little thing, a small matter.

#5 The Cheap Grace of God: God doesn’t really care. He won’t make a big deal of it.

#6 The Example of Others: Better people than you have sinned in this way. It will all be fine.

Read James 4:5-6 again.  In what ways does knowing that God caused his Spirit to dwell in you, longs for you with a holy jealousy, and gives us more grace, shape your perspective of God and of yourself?
How have you experienced Christ’s faithfulness in your life and how can you continue to remember God’s faithfulness to you?
What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week or praise God for?
