Share a time when words have built you up or torn you down. When have you experienced the life-giving or life-draining power of spoken/written words?
Read James 3:1-12. What does this passage show you about God’s character and about being his follower? What challenges, encourages, or sparks questions for you in this passage?
What images does James use in this passage to describe our communication? Which image stands out to you as helpful for understanding the power of your words?
According to James, our tongues (speech) are powerful, destructive, and inconsistent. Why is it important for us to know this?
What practices help you to be honest in examining the impact of your words on yourself and others?
In what ways can you take responsibility for your words in light of James 3:2?
Jesus is described in John 1 as the embodied Word. Consider the times and ways Jesus used his words to speak life, hope, truth, and transformation. How can God’s Word to us give us hope and confidence in the Spirit’s power to guard our tongues and use our words in life-giving ways? How can we behold God’s forgiveness and grace when we “stumble in many ways” (v2)? What is our motivation for caring about the impact of our communication?
What from this passage and this discussion is something you want to put into practice or be more aware of this week or praise God for?

Romans 10:9-10 “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”
